The Office Supplies Hall of Fame: 5 Iconic Office Products

Over the past decade, the dynamics of the office and classroom have changed. Even with all of the change, there are some office supplies that stand the test of time.

Below, we’ve outlined the five most iconic office supplies, based on their popularity in pop culture or their ability to remain a staple in a constantly changing business environment.

5) The Paper Clip

Invented in Norway back in 1899, the paper clip was invented to control the high amount of paper going around offices. Despite significant changes in the past 100 years, the paper clip manages to be a must have office supply. In addition to holding papers, you’ve probably used one to help you unclog glue bottles or re-set a calculator that might act up.

4) The Multifunction Printer

Remember when printing, copying, scanning, or faxing of documents had to be done on four different machines? The multifunction printer (MFP) became a time-saver in the office. Today, many MFP’s offer remote printing and copying, and cloud sharing solutions to help save time and effort.

3) The Bic Cristal Ballpoint Pen

The Bic Cristal became the standard for all ballpoint pens after it was launched in 1950. It was crowned the world’s most popular pen by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2006. The hole in the pen cap helps equalize pressure inside of the pen to prevent ink leakage. Today, this iconic pen can be seen out of the office on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

2) The Swingline 747 Stapler

The Swingline 747 Rio stapler made its debut during the 1999 film “Office Space.” According to the Wall Street Journal, one of the prop designers spray-painted a standard stapler red just for the film. After the film was released for home audiences, Swingline received numerous calls and e-mails asking for the stapler from the film. The iconic red stapler began production shortly after the film’s release, and remains Swingline’s best selling stapler today.
